7:44 p.m. — the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship is in the books. Nick Watney is 12 under and leads Webb Simpson by one stroke while Stewart Cink, Ben Crane, D.A. Points and John Senden are tied at 10 under. The cut was made at 1 under and included 74 players. Among those leaving early, though, was Tiger Woods, who finished at even par and missed just the eighth cut of his career, and second straight at Quail Hollow.
6:57 p.m. – D.A. Points’ round of 68 included an eagle, five birdies and three bogeys. “It was a crazy, crazy round,” he said. ” I either chipped it from 40 yards away in no‑man’s land or I missed 2‑footers. It’s a crazy round. I’m very fortunate to shoot 4 under and be where I am. I certainly left a few out there.”
6:47 p.m. — Johnson Wagner, who makes his home in Charlotte, fired a 66 that included eight birdies and two bogeys, to vaulkt up the leaderboard. It was the second in the 60s in 16 rounds at Quail Hollow for Wagner, who won the Sony Open in Hawaii earlier this year.
6:41 p.m. –Defending champion Lucas Glover finished with a double bogey after hitting his drive into the creek that runs down the left side of the fairway. He promptly gave the driver and the headcover to a youngster wearing a Clemson shirt. Glover shot 76 on Friday to finish at 4 over and missed the cut.
6:31 p.m. — Phil Mickelson just made a 4-footer for par at the 18th hole to finish 36 holes at 1 under and likely make the cut on the number. Playing partners Bill Haas and Keegan Bradley won’t be around, though — shooting 1 over and 2 over, respectively, for two rounds.
6:28 p.m. — John Senden said Quail Hollow is “definitely showing its teeth now with a little bit more breeze around.” There’s a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms the next two days but ” I think if the storms or whatever they’re predicting… stay away, the golf course will play really difficult.”
6:23 p.m. — Sang-moon Bae, who lost in a playoff at the Transitions Championship, has put himself in position for another title run this weekend. The rookie just made a 16-footer at the 15th hole to move to 7 under for the tournament.
6:06 p.m. — John Senden made his only bogey at the par-5 seventh hole but the five birdies that preceded that miscue paved the way to a 68. He’s among the group at 10 under that also includes Stewart Cink, Ben Crane and John Senden.
5:59 p.m. — A furious finish that saw D.A. Points make two birdies and an eagle in his last five holes enabled him to join the group at 10 under, two strokes behind Nick Watney. Points shot 68 on Friday.
5:45 p.m. — Lee Westwood, who ranks No. 3 in the world, got up and down from left of the green at the par-5 15th to move to even par for the tournament. He’s got three holes left, and the current cut is projected to be 1 under.
5:12 p.m. — defending champion Lucas Glover, who opened with a 72, is 2 over through 13 holes and in danger of missing the cut in his title defense. The man he beat in the playoff, Jonathan Byrd, is having better luck — he’s 3 under through 14 holes today and 6 under for the tournament.
4:40 p.m. — A 7-footer for birdie at the 14th hole has moved D.A. Points to 7 under for the tournament. He spent last weekend in Orlando working with his instructor on maintaining his angles through his swing and the work appears to have paid dividends.
4:06 p.m. — Rickie Fowler, who fired a 66 in the first round, is struggling on Friday. He birdied No. 10, his first of the day, and then made a double bogey and a bogey on the next two holes. He’s currently 3 over through 13 holes and has dropped back to 3 under for the tournament.
3:45 p.m. — Phil Mickelson hasn’t quite gotten untracked in the second round but at least he’s moving in the right direction. After making bogey from the bunker at the par-3 12th, Lefty has birdied both par 5s to move to 2 under for the tournament through eight holes on Friday.
3:29 p.m. — Bo Van Pelt has withdrawn with a wrist injury. He played nine holes in the second round and shot 1 under when he left the course.
3:02 p.m. — John Senden isn’t the only player making birdies in bunches. PGA TOUR rookie Sang-moon Bae opened his round with three of his own — holing putts of 15 inches, 13 feet and 12 feet — and is now 6 under and tied for 12th.
2:41 p.m. — one of the game’s most solid ball-strikers, John Senden is making a nice little move up the leaderboard. The Aussie, who picked up his lone TOUR win at the 2006 John Deere Classic, started on the back nine and has birdied three straight on putts of 17, 5 and 2 feet to move to 9 under.
2:19 p.m. — PGA TOUR rookie Charlie Beljan withdrew prior to the start of his second round with a hand injury. He shot 78 on Thursday.
2:08 p.m. — Sweden’s Robert Karlsson now calls Charlotte home. He made a big climb up the leaderboard, too, with a 67 that left him 6 under and just outside the top 10 when he finished.
1:45 p.m. – Meanwhile, Nick Watney continues to lead after a 64 that got him to 12 under. Webb Simpson is one back, while Stewart Cink and Ben Crane, who also carded a 64, are two off the pace.
1:15 p.m. — Needing to birdie the final hole, the long par-4 ninth, to have probably any realistic chance of making the cut, Tiger Woods landed a pedestrian 50-feet from the hole on his approach and came up 5 feet short before making par to shoot a 1-over 73. Woods is even par and one shot outside the current cut line. It would be the first time Woods has missed the cut in the same event twice. He also missed the cut here in 2010.
1:05 p.m. – Mark Russell, the vice president for rules and competitions for the PGA TOUR, made the ruling that gave Tiger Woods a free drop at the fifth hole. He said fans saw the ball bounce in an area of what he called “basically bare ground” and then surround it — but the ball was nowhere to be found. “Just looking at that area, it’s basically bare ground and trampled down pine needles,” Russell said. “If it had been deep mulch or pine needles it would have been a different situation. Based on the evidence there it looked like to me somebody picked up the ball.”
12:55 p.m. — in danger of missing the cut, Tiger Woods let a huge opportunity slip by when he ran his 4-footer for birdie past the hole on the short par-4 eighth. After nearly driving the green, Woods chipped it close but his putt lipped out and ran 3 feet past the hole and he had to settle for par to remain at even — and currently outside the cut line by a stroke.
12:45 p.m. — Bogeys on his last two holes have cost Stewart Cink a share of the lead. But he’s still 10 under and has opened with two rounds in the 60s, Friday’s being a 69, for the first time since the Farmers Insurance Open in January.
12:40 p.m. — Ben Crane has just made a 17-footer at the 16th hole for his ninth birdie of the day. He’s tied with Ben Crane at 11 under, two strokes off the pace being set by Nick Watney.
12:16 p.m. — A Stewart Cink birdie at the 16th coupled with Nick Watney’s eagle on the previous hole has the two players tied at 12 under. Webb Simpson trails by one.
12:08 p.m. – Tiger Woods was able to get his third shot at No. 5 on the green and two-putted from 27 feet for his par, according to ShotLink. According to officials, the ball landed in a cleared area but was not found. Fans surrounded the area and the ball was not found. Based on the evidence available, the determination was made that someone must have picked the ball up so Woods got a free drop. He’s still below the cutline at even par.
11:55 a.m. — Tiger Woods came to the fifth hole, his 14th of the day, even for the tournament and one shot below the cutline. He had 261 to the pin on the par 5 and hit his second shot so far left there is currently a search party looking for it.
11:49 a.m. — Carl Pettersson has tumbled down the leaderboard with a quintuple bogey 9 at the 14th hole. He hit his tee shot and his third shot left into the lateral hazard and ended up taking three drops before he was done.
11:30 a.m. — Rory McIlroy bogeyed the 18th hole, his ninth of the day, but he’s moved to 4 under for the tournament and into a tie for 21st. He needs to finish tied for seventh with one other or better to regain the world No. 1 spot he lost to Luke Donald, who is idle, last week in New Orleans.
11:20 a.m. – Ben Crane has never had a lot of success at the Wells Fargo Championship. Until Friday, that is. The man who hasn’t finished higher than 60th in four starts at Quail Hollow has made an eagle and six birdies in his first 11 holes. He turned in 30 and is 10 under and one shot off the lead.
11:12 a.m. – Carl Pettersson, the Swede who went to high school and college in North Carolina and now lives in Raleigh, is challenging for the lead at 7 under through 11 holes. He’s already won twice in the Carolinas – capturing the 2008 Wyndham Championship and the RBC Heritage earlier this year.
11:01 a.m. – Nick Watney made an 11-footer at the 11th hole – his fourth birdie in his last five holes – to join Webb Simpson and Stewart Cink at 10 under. Watney, who is looking for his first top-10 at Quail Hollow, is 6 under for the day.
10:50 a.m. – Webb Simpson, who lives less than a mile from Quail Hollow, continues to play well in front of the home crowd and playing partner Tiger Woods. He made the turn in 33 and now leads Ryan Moore and Stewart Cink by one shot at 10 under.
10:40 a.m. – Tiger Woods has just bogeyed the 18th hole — hitting his drive into the right rough and his second short of the green, then missing a 14-footer to save par. That means he makes the turn at 1 over and even for the tournament – which is the current cut line.
10:30 a.m. – The skies above Quail Hollow are decidedly overcast on Friday. The threat of showers and thunderstorms exists in the afternoon, although the chances are more pronounced on Saturday. Temperatures should be more moderate, though, topping out in the low 80s rather than approaching 90 like they did Friday.
